Event of the Year

McCarthy Lodge presents an evening of Alaskan delicacies from our chef, Chris McQueen, paired with wines selected by Harvey Steiman, Editor at large emeritus of Wine Spectator.





Chef Chris McQueen is composing a multi course culinary adventure, expressing Alaska's bounty.  Our setting is the very center of America's largest National Park, Wrangell St-Elias. McCarthy is surrounded by the highest concentration of mountains and glaciers in Alaska. 


The McCarthy Lodge is delighted to bring Harvey Steiman to Alaska for his very first visit. This will be his only Alaskan event
The Ma Johnson's Hotel, and Lancaster's Back packer Hotel have a limited number of rooms set aside for this event. Host - Harvey Steiman

Harvey Steiman joined Wine Spectator as managing editor in 1983, and later served as executive editor before taking on his role of editor at large. His tasting beats have included Australia, New Zealand, Oregon and Washington, and his Wine Spectator writings often focus on food, restaurants and travel.

Steiman has been writing about wine and food since 1973, when he started covering the subject for the Miami Herald. In 1977, he became food and wine editor of the San Francisco Examiner. He was once a jazz disc jockey, and from 1982 to 1993 hosted In the Kitchen with Harvey, a talk show on KCBS and later KNBR in San Francisco. A book of recipes from that program, Harvey Steiman's California Kitchen, was published in 1990. His most recent book, Wine Spectator's Essentials of Wine, a guide to the basics, was published in 2000.

Steiman lives in San Francisco with his wife, Carol, where they frequent opera, symphony and jazz events. They are also avid travelers and, from April to October, live and die with the San Francisco Giants.

Chef Chris McQueen started his culinary career training under Chef Scott Crawford and Chef Steven Green, two award winning chefs, at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in North Carolina. From there, he moved to Seattle, where he continued to excel and move up the culinary ladder in fine dining and catering kitchens across the city. Three years ago, he was offered an opportunity to be the head chef at an upscale, private fishing lodge in Alaska, where he exceeded the expectations of guests for two seasons. This is his first season at McCarthy Lodge, where he has implemented his standards of excellence in creating extraordinary dining experiences and leading a cohesive team to success. 


In his free time, he enjoys traveling with partner Jeanne Orlowski, McCarthy’s baker, and their opinionated Dachshund.


Chef - Chris McQueen

Matthew was born in Cambridge Massachusetts im 1981. He grew up in Jensen Beach Florida. Matthew was exposed to fine and rare wine for the first time during his tenure in the cellar and the world renowned Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa Florida
Since becoming Sommelier Certified through the Court of Master Sommeliers in 2008, He has been enjoying the fruits of his labor. His interests include stand up comedy, snowboarding, and doggos.

Sommelier - Matthew Donoian

Jessica started her career in Detroit, Michigan where she studied under Advanced Sommelier Michelle DeHayes and America’s first female Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon. After passing the Certified Sommelier exam in 2017, she relocated to Dallas, Texas to work for the French brasserie Bullion Restaurant under the direction of Michelin Starred chef Bruno Davillion.


Always an avid traveler, Jessica left Dallas last winter embarking on a solo road trip across North America. Since arriving in McCarthy, Jessica has enjoyed making magic happen with the talented team behind McCarthy Lodge Bistro.

Sommelier - Jessica Hurst
